Jasberry

Jasberry's story

Jasberry is a Thai social enterprise founded in 2013 with a mission to make rice farming a more profitable and sustainable livelihood for smallholder farmers. In Thailand, many smallholder rice farmers struggle to earn stable incomes due to low yields and volatile market prices that often barely cover production costs, leaving households vulnerable to debt and climate-related shocks.

To address this challenge, Jasberry partners with around 2,500 farming households across Northern and Northeastern Thailand to grow Jasberry Superfood rice, a naturally cross-bred purple rice rich in antioxidants, protein, and fiber. The company processes rice into stovetop-ready grains and ready-to-eat products that are sold internationally through retail and online channels.

Jasberry supports farmers by providing high-quality seeds, regenerative organic farming training, and technical assistance to improve yields and reduce costs. The company purchases rice through local cooperatives and pays farmers up to twice the typical commodity price, helping farming families earn higher and more stable incomes. These practices also use about 25% less water and fewer chemical inputs, supporting healthier soils and ecosystems.

With its recent expansion, Jasberry plans to use Kiva’s loan to secure rice supply for the upcoming harvest by providing advance payments to farmers, allowing them to meet growing demand. This is Jasberry’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.
