A loan of $25,000 helps a woman-owned business (& 2-time Kiva borrower!) bring in colorful baby toys amongst new tariffs.

Aimee's story

Did you know that 65% of children have an imaginary friend by the age of 7? Imaginary friends help babies and children develop social skills, emotional development and creativity.

My best friend Lex and I started Inklings Baby after my daughter Evie was born. Evie received lots of grey bunnies and brown teddy bears as baby gifts. Lex and I wondered where all the cool, colorful toys that we played with growing up went. Where was the imagination?

Combine color, sensory details and imaginary friends and you have a recipe for Inklings.

I have an extensive background in product development and Lex is a writer. Together we created our first character Ollie the Oddball Oddbird toy and infant novel, based on my daughter Evie. Since then, we have launched 4 other colorful characters, each with their own baby that imagines them into existences. Each baby is of a different race, gender and family dynamic because we believe the celebration of diversity starts in the nursery.

2025 brought a new wave of tariffs that affect our productions. Historically, there was a 0% tariff on our baby toys. Now there is a 30% tariff that must be paid at the time of port entry. We will use the funds to cover the tariff payment as well as a portion of our production costs for our multi color Jaffy the Giraffe rattle replenishment.

We are proud to be a woman owned, part LGBTQ+ brand. The opportunity to share our message of color, imagination and diversity to help create a better world for our kids is the reason we are so passionate about Inklings.

Because Lex is part of the LGBTQ community, we partner with the Real Mama Bears which is a group that educates and empowers parents of the LGBTQ community. By putting the Real Mama Bears Logo on all our packaging we hope to help spread awareness to their cause.
