Go Behind the Scenes: Become a Team Leader and Help Bring Kiva Loans to Life!
May 2, 2014By: Jane Loria
“It’s both a challenge and a thrill to be able to work with different people, with different cultures and education levels, in different time zones, from all over the world. It is an opportunity that is hard to come by and I have loved it.” – Team Leader Jamie
Have you ever wondered how so many loans are posted to Kiva.org? Would you like the opportunity to use your professional skills to impact the lives of Kiva borrowers? You could join Kiva to lead a team of volunteer editors and translators.
Kiva relies on a network of nearly 400 volunteers located around the world to edit and translate borrowers’ profiles. These English-, Spanish-, French-, Portuguese- and Russian-speaking volunteers review thousands of loans each month and facilitate the connection between Kiva lenders and borrowers.
Each volunteer editor and translator belongs to a team of peers who work together to edit or translate and review loans before they go live on the website. The volunteer Team Leaders work closely with Kiva staff to help monitor loan volume, motivate the volunteers, and share updates from Kiva Headquarters with the volunteer community.
Kiva’s Review and Translation Program is looking for the next class of amazing Team Leaders to help us bring as many borrower profiles to the website as possible! If you're interested in cross-cultural experiences, non-profit work, or microfinance and would like to do more for Kiva, consider volunteering your time as a Team Leader.
Here’s how some of the current Team Leaders feel about their experience:
- “I like getting to be more of an ‘insider’ in the inner workings of Kiva, and feeling like part of the community.” – Christine
- “The best part about being a TL is getting to hear stories from such a diverse group of people who are joined by Kiva.” – Samantha
- “Being a Team Leader helps you develop your leadership, management, communication and even language skills.” – Jamie
- “I love being a Team Leader at Kiva because I work with a fantastic team of people and I'm helping to make a difference in this world, every day of my life." – Sophie
