I’m Cam, and my wife Deja and I started SwapMeet RVA in December of 2021 with one simple goal in mind: to keep creating space for people. I originally moved to Richmond and opened a small storefront called The Spot on Broad Street. That experience showed me the potential for something bigger. Not long after, I helped start The Diamond Flea Market, an outdoor seasonal market. When that first season wrapped, the people I had partnered with wanted to pause during the winter. But after talking to our vendors and understanding how much they relied on that space to keep their momentum and income going, I knew we couldn’t just stop.
That’s when we made the decision to walk away from The Diamond Flea and start something of our own. We called it Shockoe Swap Meet at first, since we were set up at Main Street Station in Shockoe Bottom. That vision eventually evolved into what people now know as SwapMeet RVA. And the goal has remained the same since day one to create consistent opportunities for vendors and small business owners to grow, earn, and connect.
This is a family business in every sense. My wife and I have been running this together from the beginning, and our five children have grown up in it. Our son Nathan helps with every market, and our other kids are always around the vendors, soaking up the energy. We understand what it’s like to count on something and have it taken away because of someone else’s schedule. We never wanted our vendors to feel like that. That’s why we’ve kept this going through every season. We’ve heard countless stories from vendors who have used this market to pay rent, launch brands, and build something of their own. That’s what keeps us pushing.
SwapMeet RVA now serves hundreds of vendors every month, and the love has only grown. We host regular biweekly markets and a massive event called the Monroe Grand Market three times a year in Monroe Park. Vendors come from all over the country to be a part of it. We’re always working to improve the experience, more media, better vendor setups, seating areas for the community, and ways to make the whole space feel like a celebration.
This loan will help us grow with intention. It will help us keep supporting our vendors, elevate the spaces we hold, and continue building something that reflects the creativity, resilience, and community spirit of Richmond. We aren’t a big company. We’re a family trying to build something meaningful for other families and creators just like us.

What is the disbursed date?
In the case of partner loans, many of our Lending Partners choose to disburse loan funds before the loan request is posted on Kiva. We allow pre-disbursal because it ensures that the funds reach the borrower as soon as they are needed. Loan funds from Kiva lenders then go to backfill that amount and as a lender you assume the risk of the loan. By doing this, our Lending Partners assume the risk that, if the loan isn't funded by lenders, they will have to fund the loan without any funds from Kiva.
If a partner loan is not pre-disbursed, it will be listed on Kiva with an expected "post-disbursed" date. If a post-disbursed loan is not funded on Kiva, there is a chance that the borrower may not receive their loan. Some Lending Partners choose to disburse loans with other sources of funding, while other partners don't have the resources available to fund loans without Kiva lenders' support. No direct loans will be disbursed unless they fully fundraise on Kiva.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
There are some 0% interest loans on Kiva, including all direct loans in the United States. To learn more about the interest rates Kiva borrowers pay, you can review the "Average cost to borrower" field on a loan profile.

Lending Partners with the lowest credit tier undergo a lighter level of due diligence and do not receive a risk rating; instead, in places where a risk rating would normally appear, these partners are labeled as “Experimental.” For more information, see "What is an Experimental Lending Partner?"
Direct loans also do not receive a formal risk rating. Instead, these loans are approved through “social underwriting”, where trustworthiness is determined by friends & family lending a portion of the loan request, or by a Kiva approved Trustee vouching for the borrower. We run a small business called SwapMeet RVA, a community-centered marketplace that creates space for small businesses, creatives, and vendors to sell directly to the public. We provide consistent vendor markets where people can showcase their work, connect with new customers, and grow their brands in a supportive environment.
Our markets operate in Richmond, Virginia with both indoor and outdoor locations, including our larger seasonal event, the Monroe Grand Market, and regular biweekly markets throughout the year.
We started SwapMeet RVA in December of 2021 after seeing how much local vendors depended on community spaces to support themselves. When a previous market we helped run decided to stop during the winter, we knew we couldn’t just leave those businesses without options. We launched our own market to keep that momentum alive, and we’ve been growing with our community ever since.
What is the purpose of this loan?
We’re applying for this loan to grow SwapMeet RVA in ways that directly uplift our vendors and the greater community. While we do plan to improve the look and feel of our market through updated signage, seating, and more immersive media, our real goal is much deeper. We want to use this support to invest in the people who make our market what it is. That means increasing our marketing efforts to drive more traffic to our vendors, building stronger infrastructure so they have what they need to sell with confidence, and laying the groundwork for educational programs that teach the fundamentals of small business ownership and creative entrepreneurship.
This loan will help us build beyond just a marketplace, it will help us build a platform that supports growth, sustainability, and representation for small businesses, especially those led by Black and brown creators. Every move we make is with the vendors in mind. With this funding, we’ll be able to better serve them, provide tools and visibility they may not have access to otherwise, and continue turning our markets into powerful launching pads for long-term success.
