A loan helped to buy raw materials for her hammock business to ensure that it continues smoothly despite global economic uncertainty.

Tong's story

Tong was born fifty years ago in a completely different world. She was born in the jungle of Thailand at a time when her tribe still lived off the grid. She says “My first child was born in the jungle, too. I was only 16 years old at the time, but I didn't drop out of school… because I had never been to school!”

Over the course of her life, her world was transformed. Her children were born in a time of transition, so some of them were able to go to school. She says “My grandchildren, who were born at the hospital, all go to school.”

Tong is relieved to have the ability to weave hammocks. She says “I was injured in an accident many years ago when I was working for other people as a day laborer, and I can no longer put in the long, hard days of work in the fields.” Weaving hammocks allows her to work at home, at her own pace, and for a good wage.

And she’s proud to be pushing the next generation to even higher levels. She says “I can’t read, but my grandchildren help me read and understand the patterns for weaving hammocks. They are sure smart. I am very proud of them!”

Tong is expanding her weaving efforts by taking on her Kiva loan this year. She has even been teaching other ladies in her village how to weave. This work is the foundation for a much brighter future for Tong and her family.
